Attendance Policy

Winfield Elementary has formed an Attendance Committee. Maryland State Law requires all children between the ages of 5 to 16 years of age to attend school.  School hours are from 9:05 a.m. through 4:00 p.m.  We, as a school, are mandated by this Maryland State Law to insure that our students are in school and on time. Timely attendance is an important factor in your child’s success at school. The attendance procedures are as follows:

  • Referral to nurse when student has 3 consecutive days absent without any communication with school.
  • After 3 unexcused absences, or absence without written excuse, teacher makes contact with parent. Teacher sends student home with teacher attendance letter.
  • After 5 unexcused absences the 1st formal attendance letter will be sent home. After 9 unexcused absences the 2nd formal attendance letter will be sent home.
  • After 13 unexcused absences a Required Parent Conference will be scheduled.
  • Referral to the Pupil Personnel Worker.
  • Referral to Student Support team if attendance does not improve.
  • Letter from the State’s Attorney or certified letter from the Pupil Personnel Worker, warning of possible court action.
  • The Pupil Personnel Worker files charges with the District Court of Maryland.

If your child currently has 5 or more absences, the school will be informing you via a letter. Thank you for your support!
